Project Manager – Civil Engineering

Location: Cambridgeshire / Hertfordshire

Reporting to: Contracts Manager / Operations Director

Overview

We are seeking an experienced and driven Project Manager to lead the successful delivery of Civil Engineering projects from pre-construction through to completion. The successful candidate will take full responsibility for programme, commercial performance, quality, safety, and client satisfaction across one or multiple schemes.

Projects may include highways, rail, infrastructure, drainage, earthworks, structures, utilities, or public realm works.

This is a key leadership role requiring strong technical understanding, commercial awareness, and the ability to manage multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of civil engineering projects.
  • Develop and manage detailed project programmes (MS Project / Primavera P6).
  • Ensure works are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to required quality standards.
  • Identify and mitigate risks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Oversee subcontractor management and performance.

Commercial & Financial Management

  • Take ownership of project budgets and cost control.
  • Work closely with the Quantity Surveyor to manage variations, valuations, and final accounts.
  • Monitor cash flow, forecasts, and cost reporting.
  • Ensure commercial compliance with contract conditions (NEC, JCT, etc.).

Health, Safety & Quality

  • Promote and maintain a strong health & safety culture on site.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory, regulatory, and company HSEQ requirements.
  • Review and approve RAMS and method statements.
  • Drive quality assurance and ensure works meet design specifications.

Stakeholder & Client Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients and key stakeholders.
  • Chair progress meetings and provide regular updates on programme and performance.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, consultants, and supply chain partners.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Manage Site Managers, Engineers, and site teams.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and mentoring to project staff.
  • Ensure clear communication across all project stakeholders.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Project Manager within Civil Engineering.
  • Demonstrable experience managing budgets and commercial performance.
  • Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or related discipline (preferred).
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
