Apple’s iOS 26 update introduces a new feature that could change the way recruiters connect with candidates: Call Screening.
What is Call Screening?
When enabled, Call Screening automatically answers calls from numbers that aren’t saved in your phone. It then asks the caller to state their name and reason for calling. The responses are converted into text and displayed on the screen, so the phone owner can decide whether or not to answer.
If the caller hangs up, the phone doesn’t ring. If they do respond, the user sees their response in real time and can choose whether to engage or ignore the call.
What Does This Mean for Recruiters?
At first glance, this feature is great for blocking spam and scam calls. But for recruiters, it introduces a new layer of friction.
Many recruitment consultants call candidates from direct lines, mobiles, or even VOIP systems. These often show up as unknown numbers. With Call Screening enabled, these calls may be intercepted before the candidate even hears their phone ring.
This increases the likelihood of:
-
Calls being ignored
-
Legitimate messages being missed
-
Reduced phone engagement from passive candidates
Adapting Your Recruitment Approach
To overcome this, recruiters may need to adapt their outreach strategies:
-
Make a great first impression: Be clear, concise, and human when stating your name and reason for calling. It may be your only chance to grab attention.
-
Use multichannel outreach: Don’t rely on a cold call alone. Use LinkedIn, emails, and texts to provide context and build familiarity.
-
Follow up consistently: If your call gets screened, follow up with a message explaining who you are and why you called.
Technology Is Evolving. Recruitment Should Too.
As new features like Call Screening become more common, it’s vital for recruiters to stay aware of how candidate behaviour might shift. Understanding and adapting to these changes will help ensure candidate engagement stays high.
